At the core of M.O.M.I.E’s educational programming is the Great Persons Series. The Great Persons Series (GPS) uses the humanities and arts to introduce our children to great global leaders - freedom fighters, artists, writers, performers, athletes, economists, inventors, scientists, politicians, and more - both present and past.  The Series offers lessons not often addressed in the school environment and “brings history to life” by implementing activities that encourage discussion/debate, hands-on engagement, and the creative arts.  

 

In 2010, M.O.M.I.E's was awarded the prestigious National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award for superior arts and humanities after school programming.   

    

The Great Persons Series:

• Inspires and motivates children to become social change-makers and successful achievers of their dreams

• Taps into the individual gifts of each child, and spark within children a life-long passion for learning

• Encourages children to believe in themselves, their abilities, and develop the “I can do great things” mentality

• Expands children’s historical understanding so that they feel a strong sense of “cultural rootedness,” are proud of who they are, and realize the potential they can achieve

• Strengthens children’s knowledge base on significant periods of history, major historical events, and important vocabulary words and topics that will guide them throughout life.

• Our Great Persons Series serviced several schools in the Washington, DC and Prince Georges County as a part of our In-Class curriculum. 

In our After-School Program, our children receive up to 95 hours of humanities-based instruction every year, including creative arts sessions, dialogues and discussions, hands-on activities, workshops by special guests, field trips, and more.  In addition, M.O.M.I.E's presents ongoing opportunities for children to learn about and meet "great" leaders in the community to give our children exciting and awe-inspiring opportunities to interact with present-day history makers.  Over the years, children have met Emmanuel Jal, Haile Gerima, Sonia Umanzor, BB Otero, Dr. Hayat Sindi, Suzan Shown Harjo, Rahama Wright and more!
